Growing Mushrooms in Schools and Communities: A Project Any Group Can Run.
Mushrooms are natures' recyclers. They'll grow on straw, coffee grounds, old jeans, even an unloved book - turning waste into food in a matter of weeks, right in front of the eyes of the people growing them. For a classroom, a youth group, a community garden or a residents' association, that's not just a fun project. It's a genuine, hands-on lesson in decomposition, life cycles, and where food actually comes from.
We've spent years developing growing kits and educational projects with Kew Gardens, the RHS, and Tate Modern - and we've distilled all of it into two simple packages, built specifically so a teacher, youth leader or community organiser can run the whole thing themselves, with our support at every step.
Why mushrooms, and why now?
Fungi don't fit neatly into what most people were taught about the natural world. They're not plants - they lack chlorophyll, they don't photosynthesise, and it wasn't until 1969 that they were even given their own kingdom, separate from plants and animals. In many ways they're closer to us than to a houseplant: they breathe, taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide, and they digest their food externally before absorbing it, much like an animal's gut does internally.

That makes mushroom growing a brilliant way into bigger ideas - decomposition, ecosystems, sustainability, food waste - without a science lab or a big budget. A group of pupils or volunteers can watch a bag of used coffee grounds transform, week by week, from something they'd normally throw away into the base for their own harvest.
Two packages, built to be run by you.
Indoor Project: 6-Week Growing Kits
This is the fastest route to a first harvest, and it works indoors year-round - ideal for a classroom windowsill, a school corridor, or a community hall. Groups inoculate everyday materials with mushroom spawn and watch the mycelium take over within days:
- Used coffee grounds
- An old paperback book
- A pair of worn jeans (or jumpers, or towels - any natural fibre)
- + a copy of our book 'Project Mushroom'
Each project takes under 90 minutes to set up, and from there it's a simple weekly routine: check on it, spray it, wait for the mushrooms to appear. First harvest lands at 5 - 6 weeks, making it a natural fit for a half-term or term-length project with a real, edible result at the end.
Outdoor Project: Logs, or a Mixed Growing Package
For groups with outdoor space - a school garden, allotment, or community plot - we offer a choice:
- Logs only, a longer-term project that mimics how mushrooms grow in the wild. Once inoculated, a log will keep fruiting for 3+ years, making it a brilliant ongoing feature rather than a one-off activity. A good lower-commitment entry point if outdoor space or budget is limited.
- + a copy of our book 'Project Mushroom'
or - a mixed package, giving your group three different growing methods, and three sources of mixed mushroom varieties, to run and compare side by side:
- Button mushrooms grown in the dark, perfect for an unused shed or store cupboard - no light needed, just space.
- A paper bag growing kit, suited to a greenhouse or polytunnel, giving fresh fruiting mushrooms for months.
- Logs, the same classic technique as above, included here alongside the other two methods.
- + a copy of our book 'Project Mushroom'
Both outdoor options come with the same weekly-check, low-maintenance rhythm as the indoor kits, just on a longer timeline.
We're with you at every step
None of this is meant to land on your desk and become one more thing to figure out alone. Every package comes with our full step-by-step guides, and we're on hand throughout - by email, and in person. We regularly attend school and community events, and we're happy to come along to help launch a project, run a hands-on session, or simply answer questions as your group's mushrooms grow.
From £35 per package
Indoor packages start from £35. Outdoor logs-only starts from £65, with the full mixed package from £95 - with options to scale up for larger groups or multiple classes. Get in touch and we'll put together a package and price that fits your group size and setting.
