Making your own decorations - or any mycelium-based creation - is surprisingly simple and a wonderful way to see the true power of the humble mushroom in action.
Mycelium, the root-like structure of fungi, naturally binds together whatever substrate it grows through. In this project, you’ll harness that natural process to grow and shape your own hanging ornaments, which can be dried, decorated, and displayed for years to come.
Using everyday household items, we’ve adapted the same principles used to make mushroom-based packaging and sustainable products. With a little care and patience, your ornaments will cure beautifully - and when you’re eventually finished with them, they can go straight into the compost.
You’ll find this full project in our book Project Mushroom, pages 53–54.
If you order your copy of Project Mushroom from us today, you’ll also receive 100g of Grey Oyster spawn to get you started on any growing project.*
Or, if you’d prefer to dive straight into making, our Seed Pot Kit comes with 300g of hardwood pellets and 250g of Grey Oyster spawn - everything you need to begin.
We’ve listed a full materials and equipment list below so you can see what’s involved.
