RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2021

In the spring of 2021, we were approached by Arit Anderson, an award-winning British garden designer, and asked if we could install a display of fresh growing mushrooms as part of her RHS Garden of Hope; an edible forest designed to nourish the body and the soul at the Chelsea Flower show garden.

2021, was the first time in the history of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, that it would be held in the Autumn and with the natural onset of mushroom season, it was an honor to be able to bring mushrooms to the world-renowned flower show.

To do this we adapted our canvas Grow at Home kits into outdoor mushroom totems, that would sit amongst the ferns and shrubs that gently nestled around the steam bent, curvaceous seating area designed by Charlie Whinney.

The totem design allowed us to inoculate and initiate the mushrooms into growing in time for the flower show.  The totems also gave us the opportunity to swap any overgrown mushrooms with fresh, and newly pinning bags.   Arit graciously allowed the mushrooms to grow to their full potential, beyond the harvesting stages we’re used to, and it was a pleasure to see people’s reactions to the mushrooms on display within the garden.

As part of the RHS legacy, The Garden of Hope was relocated and lives on at the Rosewood Mother and Baby Unit in Dartford. We replaced our mushroom totems with fully inoculated hardwood logs, that will go on fruiting for many years to come.

From here we’ve had the opportunity to return to Chelsea Flower Show and this year we have the privilege to be hosting our own display of home grown, edible mushrooms.

“It was a pleasure working with the Caley Brothers (who are two sisters!) for the mushroom requirements I needed for the RHS Chelsea Garden of Hope 2021.

They’re both professional & passionate about what they do, and it’s a delight watching their success.”
