RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2022

Mushrooms can evoke very different reactions in people, and when we got chatting to James Whitting of Plants By There it was no different.  Having just won gold for his deliciously outrageous macrame clad House Plant Studio we couldn’t resist introducing ourselves and that’s where it all began.  Within just 9 months we were back at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, but this time displaying our mushrooms as they’d never been seen before.

Where disco meets houseplants and mushrooms meet ceramic, Planet Studio was an unforgettable experience.  With a Studio 54 theme we were asked if we could grow mushrooms from a variety of retro inspired ceramics – always up for a challenge we worked closely with the BBC’s Pottery Throwdown star Adam Ceramic to grow Oyster mushrooms from handmade ceramic vases.  We had pink, yellow and grey mushrooms growing out of vases, martini glasses, in fridges and as part of the 360 experience even out of the cleverly curated ‘bin bags’ round the outside of the studio.

This GOLD winning and Best In Category display pushed our growing experience beyond anything we’d done to date and had us stuffing substrate into over 300 vases of varying shapes and sizes, but what a result, with our  mushrooms deemed as ‘the breakout stars’ of the show.

2023 and we’re back again, but this time we will be hosting our own display of home grown, edible mushrooms.  As well as working with a number of other show gardens, bringing mushroom growing to the forefront of garden design.
