Kew Gardens Outdoor Mushroom Beds 2022

Working closely with Hélèna Dove; head gardener at the Royal Botanical Gardens we designed a dedicated growing space for a variety of mushrooms as part of their newly developed kitchen garden. We installed 4 different types of growing methods that will produce 11 different species of edible mushrooms and will fruit throughout the year.

Our objective was to ensure all the mushrooms on display and the way in which they were grown, would, not only offer Kew a varied and intriguing display, but by adopting simple, easy to recreate methods, visitors could look to recreate any one at home, whether they’ve a small garden, allotment, or balcony.

We’re happy to hear the space is generating a lot of positive interest and we are always excited to discuss mushroom growing ideas with anyone that would like to learn how.

2023 will also see us host our first mushroom workshop at Kew Gardens. And the following year, 2024 the launch of our first book with Kew Garden.

“The Caley Brothers designed and installed an outdoor mushroom bed for the kitchen garden at RBG Kew. They were an absolute joy to work with, and an absolute wealth of knowledge.

They produced a design which will give year-round interest and have thought about the needs of the gardeners as well as the public. Lorraine and Jodie have both been on hand since the installation for support and advice, as well as ideas for continued development now the site is starting to settle in. I have learnt so much in this process and will look forward to working with them again in the future.
