Oyster mushrooms are the world’s great recyclers, and this kit is a wonderful project for anyone wanting to learn more about growing mushrooms. Our Book Grow Kit comes with everything you need to get growing; you just need to decide which book. At Caley Brothers HQ, we’re fascinated with the growing ability of Oyster Mushrooms and this kit will show you how they can grow on many different substrates. So here we have created our own small-scale kit to give you a taste of growing mushrooms from scratch.
This fascinating growing technique was pioneered by Adrian Ogden of Gourmet Woodland Mushrooms in 2004.
As part of your Book Grow Kit, we send out the freshest grain spawn – this will need to be kept refrigerated until you’re ready to make your kit - to give you the best chances of growing this will need to be kept refrigerated and used within 4 weeks.
Important Information
Book not included. Any books will need to be less than 10 years old*.
Use by date: The spawn within your kit must be used within 4 weeks from receipt. Storage: Please keep your spawn refrigerated till ready to use. During the inoculation period of 21 days store in a dark cupboard at around 17oC.
While growing keep in a bright spot but out of direct sunlight and remember to water daily – PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED.
*Books provide minimal nutrients, so yields from mushrooms grown on them will be smaller that our other growing kits. Substrates like coffee grounds, sawdust, or straw are more nutrient-rich and effective.
Growing mushrooms on books is experimental and not optimised for cultivation.
Choose books with minimal ink (plain black text with no glossy or coloured sections). Modern books printed in the last 10 years are generally free from lead-based pigments, books from reputable publishers after the 1980s are also considered safe. Mushrooms can absorb contaminants, so newer books with non-toxic inks are safer. Male sure you avoid older books or those with unknown ink composition as a precaution.

We ship orders using YODEL 48-hour tracked service. On the date of collection, you will receive an email from us confirming dispatch, followed by an email from YODEL with your tracking number.
If you have specific delivery preferences, such as requiring the courier to ring the doorbell or leaving your parcel in a safe place,we strongly advise that you update your delivery preferences directly with YODEL via their tracking portal to ensure they follow your instructions.
Important Notes:
While we can pass delivery preferences to the courier, we cannot guarantee their compliance.
Once an item is marked as delivered, we cannot be held liable for loss or theft if the parcel is left unattended.
Alternative Shipping:
Occasionally, we may use Royal Mail 48-hour tracked service. In these cases, you will receive an email from us with shipping confirmation and tracking details.
Delivery Times:
Please allow 3–5 working days for delivery once you have received your dispatch email.
If your items have not arrived within 7–10 days, please contact us immediately.
Important: We are unable to track or ensure safe delivery of items after 21 days from the dispatch date. If the courier marks an item as delivered, we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft.
